FALL into autumnal networking.
As the air changes, the bugs bug out and pumpkins pop up aplenty. And a bouquet of mulled wine bursting with cinnamon and cloves and pumpkin-spice lattes perfume the seasonal breeze. A perfect time to attend business networking events!
But how to meet at an event? If you don’t have a refined butler like Alfred–from the movie, Batman–to make the introductions, try a name tag.
- Permission granted. A nametag gives strangers your consent to approach you.
- Ice breaker. A nametag can get the ball rolling.
- Rules of engagement. A nametag says, “Here I am, talk with me. I won’t bite.”
- Never forget. Sigmund Freud learned that names are most easily forgotten. Now, thank heavens, the nametag takes the pressure off remembering. Phew.
- Be a standout. A name printed in block letter with a black magic marker can be seen without squinting.
- Spaced out. Leave a space at the bottom for your job title, “Television Producer,” ”Studio Manager,” “Copywriter.”
- Plain Jane. Many nametags are plain without “Hello,” which takes up space. If you have room, under your name add your company, “USDA,” “IBM,” “Exxon Mobil.”
- Don’t be tacky. If the self-adhesive on a nametag is a concern, press the sticky side onto your palm before placing it onto your shirt.
- Jockey for position. Position the nametag on your right shoulder so it’s in a straight line from your handshake to eye contact (just in case you need to peek.)
Nametags, once considered as socially deadly as the pocket protector, are experiencing a rebirth. They’re now geek chic so wear one or be square. Tag, you’re it!
